Peptides as research chemicals — what it means and what the market looks like
The term "research chemicals" comes up around peptides more and more often, but it is frequently misunderstood. Below we explain what it means precisely, why these materials are intended for research only, and how to recognise a sound source within this category.
What "research chemicals" means
These are substances intended exclusively for research and laboratory use. They are not medicines, dietary supplements or cosmetics, they are not intended for human or animal consumption, and they have no approved health indications. The category describes the intended use and the status of the material, not "lower quality" — on the contrary, a sound research material is thoroughly characterised analytically.
Why research only
Peptides such as BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu or Epithalon are the subject of scientific research, but they do not have the status of a medicinal product. A responsible supplier therefore makes no health promises and gives no instructions for "use in humans" — it communicates within a research context. This is not a formality: it is a boundary, and crossing it is a warning sign.
What the market looks like
The market is fragmented — alongside sound sources there are many sellers with no documentation, with a single certificate attached to an entire range, or with none at all. The most common pain point for buyers is having no way to verify what is actually in the vial.
How to recognise a sound source
- A COA for the specific batch (HPLC + mass spectrometry)
- SDS safety data sheets with a CAS number and molecular weight
- A real company with an address that issues invoices
- Research-only communication, with no health promises
